André graduated in 1998 from the University of Pretoria with a degree in Civil Engineering. He started as an assistant resident engineer on a World Bank funded road upgrade project in Maseru, Lesotho. His first exposure to Geographical Information Systems (GIS) was in 2001 in Johannesburg where his company, WSP, was using ESRI Arcview to assist them with the application of pavement management systems for various municipal clients. It was also with these projects where he started to use Python scripting to manage his workflow. For the next 17 years his work as an engineer involved various in office design work and on site construction supervision. As a designer André likes to automate his workflow using Python and open source tools where possible. Througout the years he has built up his knowledge on various tools and integrations. His main areas of expertise are municipal services (roads, stormwater, sewer, water supply), hydrology, hydraulics, flood lines and road design. Open source tools that is part of his arsenal includes Python, QGIS, SAGA GIS, SWMM, EPANet and HEC-RAS.
André lives in Swellendam with his wife and two children. He loves cycling and going on weekend camping trips with his family.
