Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding

We aim to fund the development of certain QGIS features and other projects benefiting a wider audience through crowdfunding. It's not uncommon when working with open source software to see that a feature request from a single client will benefit a much wider audience, but exceed the budget of that client. We aim to fund the development of such features through crowdfunding.

Crowdfunding spreads the funding burden throughout the wider user community rather than relying on a single source and is therefore well suited to free and open source software projects. With reduced per-donor costs, the likelihood of projects attaining their required funding level increases, benefiting both users and developers.

How does it work?

  1. We set up a crowdfunding page containing:
    1. Details of the project
    2. An indication of project duration
    3. The amount of funding required
    4. The deadline for reaching the crowdfunding goal
  2. Fundraising
    1. The project is promoted to attract donors
    2. Donors pledge funds through a pledge form
  3. Development
    1. Development starts if the funding goal is reached before the fundraising deadline
  4. Over funding
    1. In the event of us achieving a greater amount of funding than anticipated, we will add 'stretch goals' to bring additional functionality into the funded work.
