EnergyAccess Explorer Kenya

At the time of embarking on this project, Kenya had a 71% national electrification rate (94% urban, 63% rural), with a population of 54 million. There was an opportunity to integrate electricity and clean cooking planning.

Description

Kartoza (as Project Technical Lead) in partnership with; Clean Cooking Alliance (Though Leader / Coordinator), World Resources Institute (Technical Advisor), KTH Division of Energy Systems (Technical Partner) and Nepal Open University (Local Partner) on the worked on the Clean Cooking Explorer for Nepal.

2.4 billion people lack clean cooking access, leading to 3.2 million deaths and fuel collection burdens. 760 million people lack electricity, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, with rural areas disproportionately affected. Efforts were insufficient to meet Sustainable Development Goal 7 for universal energy access.

Globally, 2.4 billion people lack clean cooking access, leading to 3.2 million deaths and fuel collection burdens. 760 million people lack electricity, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, with rural areas disproportionately affected. Efforts were insufficient to meet Sustainable Development Goal 7 for universal energy access.

The project aimed to expand the OnStove tool to Kenya to create an open-source platform for analyzing energy supply and demand data. This platform supports investment decisions for clean cooking and electricity access. The project combines OnStove with existing platforms (EAE and CCE) and the OnSSET electrification model to provide detailed insights into investment needs and technology choices. The project supports Kenya's efforts on modern energy access by:

  1. Promoting a holistic approach toward SDG7;
  2. Supporting with federal level strategic planning and policy-making;
  3. Allowing the federal level to make informed region-specific investments and decisions;
  4. Functioning as a “data repository” by providing a one-stop platform to share location-specific data and knowledge;
  5. Assisting in nationwide communication, coordination, and collaboration in the clean cooking and electricity sectors.
