Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) Energy Modelling Platform – Joint Global Training School (EMP-G)

The Energy Modelling Platform – Joint Global Training School (EMP-G) offers a unique opportunity for free training, access to expert-led discussion forums, and coaching in the latest models and tools for energy planning. Hosted at the renowned International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), EMP-G has become a landmark initiative for professionals seeking to enhance their technical and analytical skills in the energy sector.

Description

Our Involvement

Kartoza has proudly contributed to EMP-G during the 2019, 2023, and 2024 programmes by delivering specialised training in geospatial data management and software management. Our sessions have equipped participants with the skills needed to effectively collect, manage, and govern geospatial data for sustainable energy planning.

Training Overview

Our dedicated track on Geospatial Data Management provided participants with comprehensive insights into the following areas:

  1. Fundamentals of GIS: An introduction to Geographic Information Systems, providing a solid foundation for further exploration.
  2. Data Collection Quality Standards: Best practices for gathering high-quality geospatial data.
  3. Data Validation: Techniques to ensure the accuracy and reliability of collected data.
  4. Data Governance Planning: Strategies for organising, managing, and governing geospatial data effectively.

In addition to these core topics, the training covered several practical aspects including:

  1. Geospatial Database Design and Management: Guidance on structuring databases to support dynamic energy planning requirements.
  2. Geospatial Software and Analytics: Hands-on training with open-source desktop, mobile, and cloud-based tools for geospatial analysis.
  3. Application to Energy Sector Challenges: Practical case studies on planning rural electrification, optimising energy infrastructure, and mapping renewable energy potential.

Course Structure and Outcomes

The EMP-G programme was designed to blend theoretical knowledge with practical application:

  1. Online Theoretical Sessions: A one-week intensive online module provided the foundational concepts.
  2. In-Person Practical Training: A subsequent two-week session offered hands-on experience with energy data, enabling participants to apply data governance and analytical skills in real-world scenarios.

Participants also benefitted from interactive sessions where they could present their project results and receive valuable feedback from peers and representatives of the training partner institutions. This collaborative environment facilitated the exchange of ideas and best practices among energy planners, utility representatives, and IT/ICT specialists with a background in GIS.

Upon successful completion of the programme, attendees received an ICTP certificate, recognising their commitment to advancing sustainable energy planning through improved geospatial data management.

Kartoza remains dedicated to advancing the capabilities of professionals in the energy sector, ensuring they are well-equipped to address the challenges of energy access and sustainability in emerging economies.
